COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
GED Fastrack: A structured course in GED prep is offered to prepare for the GED exam which leads to a Kansas High School Diploma. This intense short course is designed for students in need of content review and skill sharpening in preparation for the GED exam. The structured course takes students through specific materials found on the GED assessment tests including: Math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, geometry and problem solving), Writing (basic grammar, essay writing), Graphics (maps, graphs, political cartoons), and Test Taking Skills. Students will take practice tests upon the completion of the course to determine readiness for the GED exam, if successful; they will be scheduled for the GED exam. Individuals who are not ready to test may opt to repeat the course or to enroll in individualized ABE to work on areas of specific need.
Job Smart: (Workplace Essential Skills): The “Job Smart” seminar is designed for individuals ready to enter the job market and for those who want to improve their job status. The seminar addresses a variety of job related skills and information including: exploring career options, strategies for finding a job, completing job applications, creating a personal resume, preparing a cover letter and thank you letter, participating in a mock interview and reviewing techniques for job retention and advancement. Students completing the course will leave with a copy of their resume and a sample cover letter on disk for future reference.
Life Management: Incorporates study in all of the above course areas to assist the learner in acquiring skills needed for daily living.
Math and Writing Seminars: These seminars address areas learners often find difficult. Students may take one or both of the seminars depending upon their own personal needs. Participants may be preparing for the GED exam, planning to enroll in college, desiring to assist their children with school work, or sharpening skills for personal satisfaction. The goal of the course is to raise the student’s skill level in the area(s) chosen.
Money Smart: (Money management) This seminar is designed to provide individuals the opportunity to acquire various money management information and skills required to appropriately handle their personal finances. Included in the courses is practical information and examples focusing on interpreting a pay stub, budgeting, banking services, checking accounts, balancing a check book and reconciling a bank statement, credit, credit card, savings, and identity theft.
Technology Basics: This seminar is designed to help adults learn basic skills including: computer terminology, keyboarding (typing), basics of Microsoft Word, use of email, searching the Web, basics of EXCEL and Publisher. This is a beginner’s course for individuals with little to no computer experience. Sr. Citizens are welcome!
